Frequently Asked Questions and Links

1.  Am I ready to start a business?

There’s a lot involved in starting and growing a business.  If you're getting started in business, use the Business Start-Up Checklist we've created to make you aware of important requirements for your new business.

The Small Business Readiness Assessment Tool takes you through a step-by-step process of answering questions regarding your business goals, legal, insurance, sales, marketing and accounting issues.

2.  Is there somewhere I can go for help?

Michigan's network of 12 Small Business and Technology Development Centers (SBTDCs) works in partnership with the MEDC to help small businesses grow and succeed.

We also encourage you to read our Starting a Business Guide. This informational piece covers business plan ideas, legal structure issues, and answers many other questions for the budding entrepreneur.

3. Do I need a license?

Michigan does not have a "generic" business license, and although the MEDC does not license businesses, we do keep a list of required state licenses.  It is a good idea to also check with your local unit of government to learn about permits and local licensing.  Below are the state agencies that issue the majority of business licenses and generate the most inquiries.

Auto Dealers' Information (Department of State)

Health Care Professionals' Information  (Department of Community Health)

Professional and Occupational Information  (Department of Labor and Economic Growth)

Sales Tax License Information (Department of Treasury)

4.  What taxes do I need to pay?

The Department of Treasury offers information regarding the taxes for which your business may be liable.  Treasury also has an online way to Register for Michigan Business Taxes

5.  Who can help me sell my product or service to the government?

Federal, state and local governments are in constant need of the small business communities' goods and services. If you are interested in selling your product to the government, contact one of the PTAC centers located throughout Michigan.

The Small Business Administration has a detailed Starting Your Business web site that offers a reality check, financing options and other resources to make your dream a reality.
