Houghton County

Houghton County is a specialized government county because the government sector dominates the economy. Michigan Technological University, a state-assisted institution, has a major influence on the economy, and this is augmented by the location of several federal and state service agency branch offices in the county. Because of its relatively large population, concentrated in the northern half of the county, it supports a wide variety of service industries. It also supports a growing tourism industry built around summer forest-based recreation, historical resources with the establishment of the Keweenaw National Historical Park, and winter recreation based on the popular activity of snowmobiling. The county is also host to a wide selection of manufacturing establishments in both the forest products sector and the non-forest products sector.
