Iron County

Iron County's economy is strongly influenced by the natural resources in the county, which are the northern hardwood forests. The Ottawa National Forest occupies the western half of the county and state and private forest lands are predominate in the eastern half. Manufacturing, services, and government are the three primary sectors of the economy. The manufacturing sector is dominated by lumber and forest products establishments, followed by food and kindred products, printing and publishing, rubber and plastic products, stone, glass, and clay products, and non-electrical equipment. A solid tourism industry has been developed around forest-based recreation and includes a wide variety of both summer and winter recreation activities.
