Manistee County is located on Lake Michigan, a part of Northwestern Michigan. Historic Manistee is the county seat, with the downtown on the state and national Historic Registers, and a riverwalk running through downtown to Lake Michigan. Coastline communities include Onekama and Arcadia. The county is a paradise for water and sports enthusiasts and is known as the “Fishing Capitol of the Midwest”. Larger lakes within the county include Portage Lake, Bear Lake and Manistee Lake. There are many rivers, streams and small lakes throughout the county. Manistee County’s growing economy has diversified over recent years with expansions in the retail trade sector and the gaming sector.
