Manistee County

Manistee County is located on Lake Michigan, a part of Northwestern Michigan. Historic Manistee is the county seat, with the downtown on the state and national Historic Registers, and a riverwalk running through downtown to Lake Michigan. Coastline communities include Onekama and Arcadia. The county is a paradise for water and sports enthusiasts and is known as the “Fishing Capitol of the Midwest”. Larger lakes within the county include Portage Lake, Bear Lake and Manistee Lake. There are many rivers, streams and small lakes throughout the county. Manistee County’s growing economy has diversified over recent years with expansions in the retail trade sector and the gaming sector. Employment anchors are manufacturing, government, and the Little River Casino Resort.

COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS

Surrounded by unspoiled natural beauty year round, Manistee County offers small town charm with recreation for every enthusiast, including some of the finest fishing in the county, white sandy beaches, 87,000 acres of National Forest land, hunting, campgrounds, horseback riding, skiing and snowmobile trails, 6 golf courses, tennis, canoeing, public access lakes, riverwalks and bandshells, bowling, historic buildings, Victorian mansions, trolley tours, museums and festivals throughout the year. Two piers along with the U.S. Coast Guard Station protect the entrance to the Manistee River channel; the much photographed and painted lighthouse and beautiful beach scenes draw many artists to the area; Manistee County has a vast natural beauty, a “hometown” feeling, and cultural arts include the historic Ramsdell Theatre, Manistee Symphony Orchestra, Manistee Art Institute, three dance studios and three art galleries.
