Midland County

On a per capita basis, Midland County has more resident engineers, chemists, and metallurgists than any other area in the nation. The Midland area economy is centered around its largest employers-the Dow Chemical Company and Dow Corning Corporation-which manufacture chemicals, plastics, and silicone products. Midland County is similar to Bay and Saginaw Counties in that they are all manufacturing centers. Service and retail trade are strong factors in the economy. Midland County has both urban and rural components. Nearly half of the county is forested and a quarter is agricultural. The city of Midland is the urban center and is situated in the east central part of the county, approximately 20 miles west of Bay City and 25 miles northwest of the city of Saginaw. Farmers in Midland County produce dry beans, corn, and sugar beets. Northwood University, Michigan Molecular Institute, Delta College, and Great Lakes Junior College are located in Midland County.
