Monroe County

Monroe County, the most southeastern county in Michigan and the only county on the western shore of Lake Erie, is the "gateway" to the state. The county is rich in historical heritage and is well situated between the three major metropolitan centers of Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Toledo. Also, Monroe County provides a pleasant mix of urban and rural surroundings and has a well-defined transportation system of roads, freeways, airports, rail lines, and a port that makes it ideal for economic development. As of the 1996 census, there are 140,488 persons living in Monroe County, in a region of approximately five million.
