2005 Cool Cities Designees:
Expanded Cool Cities Program
includes 29 projects

The Governor's Cool Cities Initiative  nurtures downtown and surrounding neighborhoods that are mixed use, pedestrian friendly, safe and clean, diverse, densely populated, and function 24/7.  This Initiative is a multi-faceted, multi-agency effort that emphasizes coordination and collaboration.   In order for the state's overall economy to succeed, its traditional downtowns and centers of commerce must gain population, generate business opportunities, and attract private investment.  The Cool Cities Neighborhoods in Progress projects are Cool Cities grants.  The CATeam champions a number of the 2004 Cool Cities Neighborhoods in Progress projects.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation's (MEDC) comprehensive Community Development program has a number of components that complement and are designed to implement the Governor's Cool Cities Initiative and ensure that Michigan's communities are attractive places to live, raise a family and start and grow a business.

Components include:

Each of these components are structured to work together and are flexible enough to accommodate the respective community's level of need, and have the capability to deal with a wide variety of development opportunities.
