Ambulance Service - Licensing Information

Required State License(s):

Ambulances should be registered with the Department of Community Health . This includes "air ambulances" (helicopters, planes) and water craft transporting persons for emergency care. Contact the Department of Community Health, Health Services at (517) 241-3026.  

Further Information:

Non-emergency vehicles (such as automobiles, vans or cutaway style vehicles taking patients to doctor appointments, etc. in exchange for compensation) must obtain a business license from the Michigan Department of Transportation, Multi-Modal Transportation Services Bureau at (517) 241-0679 or (517) 241-0680.

Contact Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Detroit for information about enrolling as a Medicare provider.  When a business wishes to qualify for Medicare, call (800) 633-4227; to enroll for Medicaid call (517) 335-5492.

If the vehicle is used to carry packages (other than those belonging to passengers), contact the Michigan Public Service Commission, Motor Carrier Division at (517) 241-6029.
