Aircraft Mechanic - Licensing Information

Required State License(s):

To perform mechanical work on an aircraft, a mechanic should be certificated with the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Michigan Flight Standard District Offices of the Federal Aviation Administration are:

  • Grand Rapids (616) 954-6657
  • Detroit (734) 487-7222
  • South Bend, Indiana (574) 245-4600.
    (The South Bend office serves the southwest corner of the state of Michigan)

When an aircraft is returned to service after major repairs, alterations, and annual inspections, it should be inspected by a certified mechanic with an Inspection Authorization (IA) Rating. (IA rated mechanics are not necessarily "on-site" full-time mechanics, but may be contracted to several service facilities performing aircraft mechanical functions.)

When operating as an aircraft maintenance facility at a public use airport a commercial operating agreement should be obtained with the airport owner.
